A cataract is formed when the natural lens
inside the eye becomes cloudy, preventing light from being focused
clearly on the retina at the back of the eye. It is thought that cataracts
may form in part because of exposure to ultraviolet light over a lifetime.
Cataracts are more common in diabetes and can be related to the use
of certain drugs, and they may have other causes as well.
Once a cataract forms, no diet or other treatment can reverse the
condition. The treatment is surgical removal of the cataract and lens
implantation.
The effect of the cataract is to cause blurred and distorted images
on the retina and vision is progressively impaired so that blindness
can eventually result. |
